Excerpt: Ernie Kovacs (January 23, 1919 - January 13, 1962) was an American comedian whose uninhibited, often ad-libbed, and visually experimental comedic style came to influence numerous television comedy programs for years after his death in an automobile accident. Such iconic and diverse shows as Rowan and Martin´s Laugh-In, Monty Python´s Flying Circus, The Uncle Floyd Show, Saturday Night Live Captain Kangaroo, Sesame Street, The Electric Company, and TV hosts such as David Letterman and Craig Ferguson have been influenced by Kovacs. Chevy Chase acknowledged Kovacs´ influence on his work in Saturday Night Live, thanking him during his acceptance speech for his Emmy award for SNL. Chase appeared in the 1982 documentary called Ernie Kovacs: Television´s Original Genius, speaking again of the impact Kovacs had on his work. On or off screen, Kovacs could be counted on for the unexpected, from having marmosets as pets to wrestling a jaguar on his live Philadelphia television show. When working at WABC (AM) as a morning-drive radio personality and doing a mid-morning television show for NBC, Kovacs disliked eating breakfast alone while his wife was sleeping in after her Broadway performances. His solution was to hire a taxi driver to come into their apartment with his own key and whose job was to make breakfast for them both, then take him to the WABC studios. While Kovacs and his wife Edie Adams received Emmy nominations for best performances in a comedy series in 1957, his talent was not formally recognized until after his death. The 1962 Emmy for outstanding electronic camera work and the Directors´ Guild award came a short time after his fatal accident. A quarter century later, he was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame. Kovacs also has a star on the Hollywood Walk ...
One day I was 12 years old and broke. I set out to mow some lawns with Grandpa´s old riding mower. One client was Arnold the stockbroker, who offered to teach me about: the beauty of capitalism. Supply and demand. Diversifying labor. Distributing the wealth. ´It´s groovy, man,´ Arnold said. The grass grew, and so did business. Arnold invested my money in many things. One of them was a prizefighter. All of a sudden I was the sponsor of my very own fighter, Joey Pow. That´s when my 12th summer got really interesting.´´Gary Paulsen´s comic story about a summer job becomes a slapstick lesson in business as one boy turns a mountain of grass into a mountain of cash. 1. But when Adam takes a lawn care job at the Autumn´s, he´ll come to know the meaning of love, lust, and loss. As Adam´s focus turns to Carolyn Autumn and less on his best friends, he will have to make choices that will lead him to lose everything he had at the beginning of summer. NOW A´´ NEW YORK TIMES´´ BESTSELLER ´´The job of the skin is to keep it all in... ´´On the island of Here, livin´s easy. Conduct is orderly. Lawns are neat. But on one fateful day, his life is upended...by an unstoppable (yet pretty impressive) beard. The battle to protect the book begins early for Dylan, as he must rely on his newly discovered powers to defeat the creatures sent to take the book. Dylan´s life is sure to be full of adventure, danger, and magic. To protect his book and the world that now relies on him, he must learn to survive in a foreign world, fight fierce horrors beyond imagination, master the magical arts, and ultimately battle a dark god who has already destroyed one world. 1.
